Horse farm weddings · the Bluegrass

Black fences, gold light, and a barn full of your people.

Horse farms are the backdrop Kentucky is known for, and for good reason. The fence lines run straight to the horizon and the evening light is the softest in the state. We know how to work on them.

01

Shooting on a working farm

Most farms that host weddings are still farms. Horses in the paddocks, barns that are off limits, roads you can't block. We talk to the farm manager beforehand so we know where we can and can't go, and we keep our footprint small: two people, two cameras, no light stands in the pasture.

What that gets you is the real place. The fence line at seven in the evening. A first look under an oak that was there before the farm was. Your grandparents on the porch of the farmhouse. A reception in a barn with the doors open and the fields going blue outside.

02

Timing the light

The most useful thing we do on a farm wedding is put your portraits in the right twenty minutes. The Bluegrass is open country, so the sun stays strong late and then goes golden all at once. We plan the ceremony so the shade reaches the chairs, and we'll borrow you for ten minutes right when the light peaks. You'll be back before the salad.

Drones are usually welcome on farms, airspace permitting, and a farm is where they earn their keep. The fence lines and the barn roof from above tell the whole story in one shot.

Midway. A refurbished barn on a 365-acre horse farm.

Ashford Acres Inn

Cynthiana. Sixty-four acres, an inn, and a lot of sky.

Good to know

Questions people ask us.

If your question isn't here, put it in the inquiry and we'll answer it there.

  • When the farm and the airspace allow it, yes, and farms are where it's worth doing. We check the rules for each property and keep the drone well away from the horses.
