Barn weddings · Kentucky

Barn doors open, string lights on, everybody dancing.

Kentucky has more good barn venues than almost any state. We've worked out how to shoot the bright field outside and the dark dance floor inside without a light stand in anyone's way.

01

Two kinds of light

Outside a barn the light is open and strong, which is right for a ceremony in the shade of the building and portraits in the field after. Inside, it's string lights and chandeliers and not much else. We shoot the outdoors as it is and bring two or three small, discreet lights for the reception, so your first dance looks like a first dance and not a cave.

We never put a light panel in a ceremony and we never put a spotlight on the dance floor. The pictures should look like the night felt.

02

Planning the day around the barn

Barn venues are usually out in the country, so we build the timeline around the sun. Ceremony when the shade reaches the chairs, portraits in the last twenty minutes of golden light, sparkler exit when it's actually dark. We go look at the property beforehand to find the good spots and the quiet ones.

Clara photographs and Nathaniel films, together, so there's one crew moving through the barn instead of two. Real microphones go on the vows and toasts, which matters even more in a big room with an echo.

Places

Barn venues we'd love to shoot

A few of the barns across Kentucky that host weddings and photograph well:

The Polo Barn at Saxony Farm

Lexington. Vaulted ceilings and rolling hills.

The Vintage Barn at Merefield

Midway. Chandeliers and Edison lights on a horse farm.

The Venue at Evans Orchard

Georgetown. A barn in an orchard.

The Show Barn at Daynabrook Farms

Harrodsburg. A huge interior and an outdoor pavilion with fire pits.

I Do at the Barn

Richmond. A renovated barn with a covered pavilion.

The Barn at Mills Farm

London. 700 acres and four ceremony sites.

The Prickel Barn

Verona. One of the biggest open barns in the tri-state area.

These are venues we'd like to work at. We aren't affiliated with any of them.

  • A couple of small lights placed where they won't be in anyone's way, so the room looks like a warm party. No spotlights, and nothing at the ceremony.
